Stars and Stripes

I heard
you say
it.
My heart
stopped.
I knew it
but when
I actually
heard you
speak
it,
It became
truth.
I waited
all day
to cry.
I pushed
it down
with smiles.
As I entered
the shower
I let it out.
I did not
need to turn
on the water.
My tears
bathed my
heartache.
All I could
see was
stars and stripes.
That was
the last thing
I was looking
at before
you said
those words.
I let the stripes
fall.
But I am keeping
the stars.
They were mine
first.
