And I Was Done
The things
I did
that day.
I drove my
car with
the windows
down and
watched
the dust
in the rearview
mirror.
I parked
on the side
of the road
and got out
and walked
down
to the shoreline.
The water
rolled
over the
rocks
and told me
what I already
knew.
I took off
my shoes
and socks
and
walked into
the cold
river
as the
August
sun kept
me warm.
I felt the current
grab my ankles
and toes
so softly
that if
I lay down
the river would
take me
all the way
to the sea.
That's when
I realized
that I was
that kind
of woman.
And I was
done.
